In honor of those died on September 11th, 2009, I'm participating in Project 2,996. I requested a firefighter for obvious reasons.
Vernon Paul Cherry
Vernon was a 49 year old New York City Firefighter at Ladder Company 118 who died at Ground Zero that day. I've had his assignment for over a month now and couldn't bring myself to sit down and write it until this morning. The information I have on Vernon is from remembrance walls and previous 911 tributes. Reading the comments from his family and friends is heartwarming and personal and tragic at the same time. Below is a sampling of information on Vernon. I will think of him and his family and friends left behind all day today.
Vernon Paul Cherry was much more than a Brooklyn firefighter. He was a husband to wife Joanne, a father, a brother to 4 siblings, an uncle, and a grandfather nicknamed "Paw Paw". Vernon also had a great talent that brought him into many other lives, that of a singer. Vernon was known for signing around family, friends, and in the firehouse. He took side gigs at weddings and other celebrations. He had a beautiful voice fondly remembered by everyone who heard it. In August of 2000, Vernon and some other firefighters recorded a song for a young Crystal Perez who was struggling with Leukemia. Crystal has since recovered and her family has posted in Vernon's memory.
Vernon now rests at Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY
We will never forget.
